I was asked to send in some art for the first issue of the lovely and lovingly-crafted Ferocious Quarterly, and they specifically requested one of my Cloudy Collection prints. Hole Sweet Hole made for a good single-page vertical image. I’ll also be contributing original work to issue #2.

The wonderful German art tome publisher, Gestalten, put together an amazing collection of letterpress and screenprinted design-y art in the book Impressive. The Cloudy Collection got a wonderful pair of spreads in the book, and the editors kindly trimmed down my enthusiastic ramblings about the project.

I was approached at the end of 2009 by Creative Arts Projects to create a tutorial about creating letterpress prints. The issue was devoted to comparing handmade and digital processes and how the two can function together. With the assistance of Harold Kyle at Boxcar Press, I laid out the process of going from idea to design to press for making a two-color letterpress print.

I was also asked to answer the magazine’s “Big Question”:
The question: “If you could only ever work in one medium – handmade or digital – which would you choose, and why?”
My answer: “With a pencil and paper, I make any shape I can imagine, light or dark marks, thick or thin lines, crisp or smudgy – a pencil has it all. It never crashes, I never need to charge it, and I don’t have to turn it off during takeoff and landing. I love my computer, but I always start with my pencil.”

A limited edition letterpress print for the third edition of my quarterly project, the Cloudy Collection. The text is adapted from a piece of folk art by Ed Larson that we had over our fireplace the entire time I was growing up. That wood carving said “Wood Is Good”.
