Every spring, the UNC Kidney Center organizes a walk/run fundraiser for their research. I’ve had the opportunity to work with them every year since their inception and I always have fun figuring out where to put the next Carolina Blue anthropomorphised kidney.

Monster GIFs

Prompted by a friend on a night with a full-moon, I made a short animated GIF loop of a man turning into a werewolf and back again. I had so much fun with it that I just kept going, and I ended up making six different monster-y animations altogether. I collected the entire group of monsters here.

The fantastic illustrator, Steve Wolfhard, created a great excuse for a bunch of other illustrators to create some autobiographical characters in the spirit of Pokemon. His Portrait-Dex site compiles these efforts.

My entry combines my love for hiking with my terrible sense of direction, along with a revival of my dormant Latin verb conjugation skills.

Three Bears

In March of 2010, my friend Carrie lost control of her car when trying to avoid an animal in the road. She and her fiance were killed in the accident, but their four-year-old son, Eamon, survived. I made this comic as both an emotional response the the tragedy, and also as a fundraiser for a trust in Eamon’s name.

The cover is a two-color letterpress print, made at Boxcar Press, where Carrie worked. The story runs 32 pages and is printed in black and white.

biodieselSMARTER US Map

Biodiesel used to be this incredibly rare niche industry where self-motivated individuals would go to their local greasy spoon to beg for used french fry oil to pour into their modified cars. ~~I remember seeing something about it on 3-2-1 Contact as a kid.~~ [it turns out it was corn ethanol on the show!]

Now there are hundreds of fueling stations that serve biodiesel alongside traditional gasoline. The periodical biodieselSMARTER asked me to create a map showing every known station that serves 99% or higher biodiesel (B99 or B100) in the United States, along with some facts and stories about the industry in general. The result is this special edition of the magazine that consists solely of the wall-sized 34″x22″ map.
